PMI Foam Grooving and Perforation: CAD Questions Before Machining

Grooving and perforation are not generic add-ons. They are drawing-defined core features that must be connected to forming, resin, handling, bonding or assembly requirements before machining is scoped.

Start with the engineering decision

Begin by defining the functional purpose of every groove, channel or perforation. A feature may assist forming, create a geometric interface, accommodate an adjacent part or support a process step. Its purpose affects whether depth, width, edge radius, exit condition and positional reference are critical or simply informative.

Translate the component into a controlled core brief

The CAD package should identify the controlling revision, datum surfaces, feature pattern, blind versus through condition, local thickness and all areas that must remain intact. Grooves close to an edge, a sharp transition or a thin section should not be left to visual interpretation. A 3D model and a drawing note often need to work together.

Connect the material question to the process route

Discuss core form, workholding direction, machining access, debris control, visible surfaces and the downstream composite route. If a groove relates to a bagging or forming step, explain that use in the RFQ. The right sequence is project-specific; the same feature may need a different approach on a flat panel than on a complex contoured core.

Keep technical evidence within its stated boundary

Inspection should trace to the controlled geometry, not to a generic claim of precision. Identify the features that matter to fit, laminate interface or assembly, along with any requested visual check and handling protection. Universal tolerances are not published because the appropriate inspection reference depends on the actual core geometry.
