Start with the engineering decision
Begin with the component and define the purpose of the core within the sandwich construction. State the target geometry, thickness, laminate context and relevant project requirements. The applicable PMI grade, mechanical data, temperature context and any programme criteria must be confirmed from controlled documentation rather than inferred from a sector label.
Translate the component into a controlled core brief
Flat panels, curved trims, local interfaces and assemblies need different core-form discussions. CAD or a controlled drawing should identify which features are functional, which surfaces establish fit and what dimensions must be inspected. This prevents a materials enquiry from being disconnected from the finished component.
Connect the material question to the process route
Explain whether the core is expected to be machined, formed, bonded or processed within a broader composite route. The processing window and handling requirements should be checked with the selected grade documentation. Do not assume that a process used in one rail-related component transfers to another.
Keep technical evidence within its stated boundary
