How to Read a PMI Foam Datasheet Before Releasing a Composite Core

A datasheet is most valuable when it is read as a controlled document for a named grade and a defined use case. This article explains how to preserve that context from early search through project release.

Start with the engineering decision

Confirm the document title, revision or issue date, manufacturer, grade name, density class and whether the values are typical, minimum, maximum or otherwise qualified. The user-provided PMI TDS explicitly states that its figures are for reference rather than guarantee. That wording must remain attached to the values when a page or RFQ cites them.

Translate the component into a controlled core brief

Read physical dimensions, thickness and tolerance information in relation to the actual part. A sheet size does not necessarily describe the finished CNC core, and a part drawing may introduce geometry, nesting, feature and inspection requirements beyond the starting material form.

Connect the material question to the process route

Check which test conditions accompany density, compression, tensile, shear, flexure, thermal or dielectric fields. Method names such as ISO 845, ISO 844, ASTM D1621, ASTM D638, ASTM D790 and ASTM C273 describe different tests and should not be mixed casually. Temperature, sample state and test rate may change how a number should be used.

Keep technical evidence within its stated boundary

When two documents differ, do not average them into a new property claim. Keep the source layers distinct: a typical TDS value, a sheet TDS value and a single-test sample result answer different questions. Request the applicable current document before final selection, release or qualification.
