Start with the engineering decision

Three-axis planning may be relevant when the component is primarily planar, stepped, pocketed, drilled or accessible from a stable set of directions. A multi-axis discussion may be relevant for continuous surfaces, complex contours or features that cannot be safely approached from the same directions. Neither label automatically defines the outcome; the CAD model and feature access do.

Translate the component into a controlled core brief

Separate features by accessibility. Identify top, bottom and side references, undercuts, local transitions, deep channels, thin walls, curved faces and any mating surfaces. A useful review also identifies whether a part can be re-oriented between operations or whether the geometry requires a continuous approach. These choices affect setup, inspection and protected handoff.

Connect the material question to the process route

The machining approach must connect to the selected foam form, fixture logic, required surface condition and next composite operation. A route that reaches the surface is not automatically the route that preserves the drawing intent. Include the controlling revision, quantity context, critical features and packing condition in the RFQ.

Avoid generic promises about tolerances, toolpaths or machine capability. Request a project review using the actual model and inspection reference. The output should clarify the relevant process path and any assumptions that must be resolved before production release.
